A set of forty permutations on an early version of the Prelude in E Minor (BWV 855a) by J. S. Bach.
A permutation is where we take a collection of things and arrange them in a different order. In this case we have applied the process of permutation to some, but not all, of the notes in the treble part of the Prelude to create a set of new preludes that are pleasing to the ear, and a joy to play.
Each permutation is recognisably a variation of the Prelude and is recognisably by J. S. Bach, but is a new piece of music.
Sheet music for this album is available on Amazon, in our book, "The Well-Permuted Clavier, Volume 3". For those interested in theory, we explain the philosophy and mathematical process that we call "well-permutation" in a detailed introduction.
